08 May 2019

Two councils in northern Tasmania will share in more than $86 million for various community projects, critical infrastructure and new industry under a Bill Shorten Labor government, federal Labor Member for Lyons, Brian Mitchell today announced.

Mr Mitchell said the funding demonstrated Labor’s ongoing commitment to northern Lyons and was in addition to announcements that Labor will provide extra funding to every public school in the region.

“Labor’s commitments will improve amenities and community facilities and critical infrastructure in the Meander Valley and Kentish council areas,” Mr Mitchell said.

Newly funded projects include:

  • $81 million for roads,
  • $3.5 million for flood mitigation in Railton,
  • $2 million to go toward the construction of the new Deloraine sport centre,
  • $250,000 for a Meander Valley bio-energy plant.

Mr Mitchell said Labor would also provide $20,000 to the Railton bowls club to assist with the purchasing of new lawn mower, solar panels and shade cloths.

Residents of these regions will also benefit from Labor’s major investments in health, including free dental care for pensioners, driving down out of pocket costs for people suffering cancer and more funds to help public hospitals bring down waiting lists.

Labor will also rebuild TAFE providing young people in the region with the skills and experience they need to get secure jobs.
