HODGMAN MUST RELEASE TasTAFE INTERIM REPORT

03 Oct 2017

Federal Member for Lyons, Brian Mitchell MP has joined his state colleague Josh Willie and the Australian Education Union’s TAFE President Damian von Samorzewski in calling for the release of the first interim report into TasTAFE.

“This sector is far too important to keep matters of concern hidden.

“Unfortunately it’s disappointing that the state government is back-peddaling on its promise to keep this process open and transparent, for the staff, the students and the community.

“It sends a worrying signal about how the Liberals approach TAFE and vocational education,” Brian Mitchell MP said.

Malcolm Turnbull cut $637 million from TAFE and apprentices in this year’s budget.

Australia now has 148,000 fewer apprentices and trainees than when the Liberals came to power.

By contrast, Labor has a comprehensive and fully funded plan to support TAFE and boost apprentice numbers.

Labor will ensure federally funded projects prioritise Australian jobs, with at least one in 10 jobs on major projects filled by apprentices.

Labor will restore the $637 million dollar funding and prioritise TAFE as the backbone of the Australian VET system.

Labor will also invest $100 million in a Building TAFE for the Future Fund, to revitalise TAFE campuses and facilities in regional and outer metropolitan areas.

Ends.
